One Flu In

By Petya Sabinova

We had it coming, we only have ourselves to blame, to reword the song from musical Chicago. Knowing that the country is surrounded by neighbours fighting the avian flu and believing that we were somehow untouchable was stupid and nature finally had the last laugh. Truth is we tend to slack. A couple of days on high alert and we become less and less alert. The scary guy checking your basket at the border is less and less interested in what you're carrying. He's more and more engaged with biting his nails, and poof, or should I say chirp, in flew the flu.
No point in crying over spilt milk, however, so now we have to focus on what comes next. It's time for authorities to show that they're worth their emergency budget and eradicate the danger before it grows. So far the system seems to work well, but the one thing that could bring it all down is greed. I'd say pay the villagers all you can for the killed fowl and don't be stingy, because if they feel they're being fooled there's no telling where they'd sell the meat and who'd end up dining on it.
