Sofia University Kliment Ohridski has been granted permission to open a School of Medicine to its existing departments, the University's Dean Boyan Biolchev announced Tuesday.

The first batch of students in the newly established Medicine Major will start classes in the fall of 2007, Biolchev added.

The university will soon start the procedure for accrediting the new major, and is yet to determine the number of spots they are going to open for the premier year. The Dean hopes to enrol some foreign students as well, as the price they pay for a year of medical school in Bulgaria is between EUR 10,000 and EUR 12,000.

At present Sofia University is sifting out through candidates for the teachers' spots in the new school.

Students will be accepted after passing a test in Biology and another one in Chemistry. So far the Medical Academy is the only place in Sofia where students can study Medicine.
