The award is one of the highest state honours that French President Jacques Chirac may confer on no more than seven persons a year.
"Your commitment throughout your brilliant career, your work for the European cause and for bringing Bulgaria closer to Europe," a letter by Catherine Colonna, France's minister delegate for European affairs, spells out the president's arguments for conferring the award on Simeon Saxe-Coburg.
The date of the awarding ceremony was not immediately known.
This is the second time that shows Simeon Saxe-Coburg hasn't lost the respect and support of Europe's most influential politicians and royal families following his implication in the Savoy sleaze affairs.
Over the weekend Saxe-Coburg attended the silver wedding of their Royal Highnesses Henri Albert Gabriel Felix Marie Guillaum, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa Mestre, where he was reportedly showered with compassion.
