Bulgaria is ready to dispatch BGN 160,000 (EUR 80,000) as humanitarian aid to Indonesia, where the death toll of Saturday's earthquake exceeds 5,000 people.

Sofia has already informed the EC's disaster Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) over its relief supply, including medicaments, tents, mattresses and blankets, Disaster Management Minister Emel Etem announced.

Health, shelter and logistics worth of EUR 3 M have composed the European Commission's fast track humanitarian aid decision adopted today following the earthquake in Java, Indonesia.

While on a visit to Lom, a town hit by the recent floodwaters of the Danube, on Monday Minister Etem expressed her condolences to the government of Indonesia over the thousands of victims to the natural calamity.

Emergency workers and supplies are arriving at the scene, but driving rain has made conditions worse for survivors of the quake. The disaster killed more than 5,000 and hurt 20,000.

Activity at nearby erupting volcano Mount Merapi is said to have increased three-fold since the quake. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the area near it.

Indonesia is located in a zone known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
