EU, NATO Hail Montenegro's Independence
Politics | May 23, 2006, Tuesday"I want to congratulate the Montenegrin people for the successful referendum that took place yesterday," Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana commented after a joint committee meeting between the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
"Of course what we can say at this point in time from the European Union is that we will fully respect the result of the referendum," he said, adding that a turnout put at 87 percent "confirms the legitimacy of the process."
Meanwhile NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer congratulated Montenegro for the results of the referendum but said it is still too early to talk about including Montenegro in the NATO.
Official results showed that a total of 55.5 percent of voters chose Montenegro's independence, exceeding by 0.5 percent the target majority set by the European Union.
