Mtel Launches ITC Broadband Platform, WiMAX Network

Business | May 4, 2006, Thursday // 00:00

Mobile operator Mtel announced the establishment of the ITC Broadband Platform, which aims to improve the quality and penetration of broadband technologies and services in Bulgaria.

The initiative is modelled on the experience of Telekom Austria, which launched a similar platform, called "ARGE Breitband Austri" in 2004.

"Broadband technologies allow fast access at the speed of 300 KB per second even if there are no fixed networks," Josef Vinatzer, Mobiltel CEO, said.

Mtel also announced the launch of the first Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access (WiMAX) network in Bulgaria.

In May the network will cover three cities - Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. Because of the expensive equipment, produced by Siemens, the network will be used by business clients only.
