Bulgaria's Furniture Industry Lacks Timber
Business | April 28, 2006, FridayBulgaria is experiencing a serious lack of timber for the furniture industry, Agriculture and Forestry minister Nihat Kabil said Friday.
There are about 4680 companies in Bulgaria that produce furniture and their demand for materials is way too high, he said. The amount of timber that all the companies have demanded so far is about two times higher than the amount of timber that could be logged in a year in the country.
Floods have also partially damaged forests infrastructure and this, along with all the other problems has led to tension between furniture manufacturers and the National Forestry Office. The ministry and the Office are trying to satisfy the industry's demand and to encourage local businesses, but this could not happen at the expense of nature, Kabil said.
