Bulgaria Should Back Unmarried Couples - Survey

Politics | April 13, 2006, Thursday // 00:00

About 35% of Bulgarians believe that the couples that live together should receive the same social service benefits as married couples, a survey shows.

Bulgaria's National Center For Research of Public Opinion (NCRPO) came up with those results after they surveyed 1006 people in 86 towns and villages. The outcome of the research was presented Thursday during a meeting titled "Social policies and development of human resources on the brink of EU membership," organized by the Simeon II National Movement (SIINM).

23% of the people asked think that this is a bad idea and have firmly stood against it. Currently fathers in Bulgaria can only receive the state's child support sum if they are married to the mother. However, many young couples nowadays prefer to live together without formally signing under their union.
