There is a great tolerance towards prostitution in Bulgaria, a survey of MBMD polling agency showed.

Mira Yanova from MBMD explained that interviews with prostitutes, clients and girls aged 14 to 20 have been carried out. She underlined, however, that only the quality part of the survey is ready and that the rest of it is still to be completed.

Yanova explained that most of the young people are not aware of the word "companion" and therefore they are involved in prostitution.

The usage of paid sexual services is a necessity and a compensating mechanism for the men's problems, Yanova pointed out.

Most of the ladies that participated in the survey stated that they do not like their social role and that they are ashamed of it, but because of lack of other alternatives they are forced do it. It is too early to legalize prostitution in Bulgaria, it was also stated.
