A Russian national was detained when trying to smuggle out of Bulgaria ancient books with high historical value.

He was arrested at the Plovdiv airport.

The four books the Russian tried to smuggle are dated back to the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. They include "Evangelie" published in New York in 1877, "Vvdenie w istorii bolgarskih slavyan" published in Moscow in 1847, an atlas with 20 maps and schemes of the Bulgaria lands during the Russian-Turkish war and another three albums with illustrations and photos also published in the beginning of the last century.

The valuable books were found in the luggage of the Russian citizens, who was to leave Bulgaria with a charter flight. He explained that he bought the books at one of Sofia's markets for antiques. Besides the books there were other valuable artifacts.
