21-Year-Old Meat Stopped at Bulgarian Border

Bulgarian customs officers have stopped three containers with over 75 tons of old beef at the Kulata border checkpoint with Greece.

Preliminary data shows that the meat has been produced in Ireland in 1984. The three containers belonged to a Bulgarian import company named Bul Impex and were traveling from Greece, private bTV announced.

The customs officers doubted the quality of the meat so they did a more thorough check. Currently the customs and the National Veterinary Services are checking the beef. The results will most likely be ready Sunday at the earliest.

The beef was purchased in 1986 and is dangerous not only because of expiration issues, but also because it might have been infected with the mad cow disease. Yambol-based company Bul Impex planned on distributing the meat in Plovdiv. The company already has a serious list of 17 violations with the authorities.
