Bulgarians have established a non-governmental organization to fight the use of silicone in aesthetic surgery, it emerged Thursday.
During a special press conference they published cases of dramatic health complications among Bulgarians who had silicone implants.
Silicone often loses its initial shape, seeps thought tissues and causes swelling and infections, the Civil Movement for Prevention of The Use of Illegal Silicone Means in Medicine said.
Its chairperson, renowned Bulgarian journalist Iskra Bankova, explained that Bulgarian law allowed only silicone implants.
Nevertheless, tens or even hundreds of clinics offer direct input of silicone gel into the body, Bankova alarmed.
She had interviewed leading surgeons who treated silicone-triggered complications, and collected grisly images of the patients' disfigured bodies.
Silicone has turned into a symbol of welfare and celebrity status, making many young women wish to have implants, the organization says, warning that most patients were unaware of the possible health damage.
