A suspected case of bird flu is being investigated in Belgium, SkyNews reported.

A man has been taken to a hospital in the country with bird flu symptoms after returning on Thursday from a region in Turkey hit by the killer virus.

If confirmed, it would be the first case of the virus in a human in Western Europe.

"It is a suspected case, the diagnosis of bird flu is not confirmed at the moment," said Inge Yooris, a member of a Belgian government committee on bird flu, as quoted by SkyNews.

The sick man is being treated at a hospital in the capital Brussels, Yooris added.

The deadly H5N1 strain of the virus has already killed three people in Turkey. Fifteen other Turks have been infected since the outbreak began two weeks ago.
