Bulgarian Drivers Confused over License Plate Changes

Business | January 9, 2006, Monday

Bulgaria's drivers are now confused over the mixed reports regarding the fate of their license plates upon the country's EU accession.

The plates would have to be changed once more when Bulgaria enters the EU, some media reported, while traffic police officials negated it.

The confusion comes out from the fact that all the licence plates of the EU country members are required to have the Union's starred flag on the blue band in the right side, along with their country's flag and abbreviation. Currently Bulgaria's licence plates are up to all EU requirements, except for the flag, as the country is still not a member.

Reports of an upcoming change of plates have enraged drivers, especially the ones who are currently obliged to change their old style numbers by the April 1, 2006. The deadline was pulled from January 1, 2007 only days before this information came about.

If the reports were confirmed, all these people would have to re-register their cars once more only seven months after they have already done so for the price of EUR 29. Added to the number of people whose cars have already been registered with the new plates, the country's authorities are looking at long lines and many infuriated drivers.

One option, discussed by officials is supplying all vehicles that leave the country with a EU-flag sticker to place at the needed spot.

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?
That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out.

That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters.

That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor.

That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections.
