Russia to Alter Gas Price for Bulgaria

Business | January 4, 2006, Wednesday // 00:00

The price of the Russian gas imported in Bulgaria will be changed in 2006, Russia's Ambassador to Sofia Anatolii Potapov announced.

In his words in the contract Bulgaria and Russia signed a few years ago it was written that the prices would be reformed accordingly to the world gas prices. Ambassador Potapov could not say the level of the increase nor when the boom is expected to take place.

The comments of Ambassador Potapov came after a report from the Russian section of Deutsche Welle that Russian gas monopolist Gazprom considers doubling gas prices traded to Bulgaria.

Sofia, however, has played down the threat saying that Bulgaria and Russia have signed a contract that is still valid.

Meanwhile, the director of Agropolichim Vassil Alexandrov said in an interview for local Darik radio that the contract will be changed by the end of the first three months of 2006. The new gas price Bulgaria will have to pay to Russia will be higher by USD 30-40 or USD 240 for 1,000 cubic metres.
