Bulgaria "a Racist Society" - Poll

Politics | December 20, 2005, Tuesday // 00:00

Bulgarians, Turks and Serbs are the least tolerant toward immigrants in Europe, a Gallup survey shows, as quoted by Deutsche Welle.

The opinion poll found that no more than 7% of those asked in Turkey believe immigration is beneficial. Bulgaria and Serbia rank second and third in their intolerance to foreigners, who settle in the country, stoking the fires of racism. In these two countries every tenth respondent says he/she favours immigrants.

Meanwhile the United Press International reported the results of an opinion poll commissioned by the newspaper Le Monde, and conducted by the prestigious TNS-Sofres group. It found that only 39 percent of the French now believe that the views of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the anti-immigrant and extreme right leader of the Front National party, are "unacceptable."

With low birth rates and an aging population, European countries, including Bulgaria, are being forced to open their arms to immigrants, though many native-born citizens don't like it.

Americans are much more tolerant to immigrants, half of them showing positive attitude to the foreigners in the United States, Gallup points out.
