TIME Shows Top US Talk Host Rude about Bulgaria

Politics | December 10, 2005, Saturday

Conan O'Brien, host of the American NBC talkshow "Late Night", will certainly anger many Bulgarians after the TIME magazine quoted him with an insulting joke about Bulgaria's presence in Iraq.

"Bulgaria and Ukraine are considering pulling their forces out of Iraq. Yeah, it's going to happen as soon as they find a car that can seat six people, " the latest issue of the TIME magazine cited the talkshow host in its section for political homour "Punchlines" (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1137665,00.html )

Bulgarians, living abroad, have been urged to address the issue urgently and strike back to what has been called an insulting and disgraceful joke.

In May this year Bulgaria's Parliament backed the government's proposal to reduce the country's military unit in Iraq to 400 by June and withdraw it completely by the end of December 2005.

Earlier this week Bulgaria announced it is very likely to continue its military involvement in Iraq with a non-combat unit to guard the Ashraf refugee camp.

Bulgaria lost 13 soldiers in Iraq's military operations, most of whom were killed in insurgent attacks, one was killed by U.S. troops in a friendly fire incident and five died in vehicle accidents.
