Austria has arrested controversial British historian David Irving for Holocaust denial, local authorities have confirmed.

Irving was seized as he visited Vienna to address a group of students.

The warrant for his arrest was issued far back in 1989, under Austrian laws that make Holocaust denial a crime.

If a trial starts and Irving is found guilty, he could be jailed for up to 20 years.

Irving has challenged the extend of the Holocaust, and has argued that that Adolf Hitler knew nothing about the systematic slaughter of six million Jews.
