UNESCO May Scrap Bulgarian Culture Site

There is an imminent threat that the ancient town of Nessebar be scrapped from the UNESCO list of world culture and history heritage.

The alarm was raised by Bulgarian Culture Minister Stefan Danailov while on a visit to Kurdzhali, south Bulgaria.

He said the UNESCO has received numerous signals from western tourists complaining over Nessebar's stand-packed streets.

Minister Danailov said he would commence urgent talks to avoid the threat of such move that would be detrimental for Bulgaria's image as a tourist destination.

The alarm has been signaled in a moment when the country prepares the candidatures of another three historic and cultural sites to be enlisted by UNESCO, including the ancient town of Plovdiv, the tomb in Alexandrovo and the ancient sanctuary of Perperikon.

Stefan Danailov announced his ministry carries out thorough renovation works to open for tourists the Valley of the Thracian Kings, the old capitals of Bulgaria - Pliska and Preslav, as well as the Renaissance Church in Veliko Tarnovo - St. 40 Martyrs.
