Bulgarians are disgusted by the failure in crime and corruption fighting, United States Ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle, said during his first public lecture in the country.

He commented on the recent double murder in Sofia, by saying that the disappointment in the crime-fighters' effectiveness undermined the trust that citizens had in institutions. This trust is vital for a strong democracy, he added.

Beyrle also offered help from both the US and the EU in fighting these problems in the country. However he said that all the help in the world would be useless if Bulgarians did not have the political willpower to handle the situation.

The Ambassador's speech was given in commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of the establishment of the Atlantic Club in Bulgaria.
