UN: 200 M of World's Youth Live in Poverty

Politics | October 5, 2005, Wednesday

Over 200 million youth around the world live in poverty and 88 million are unemployed, a UN report said, urging greater investments in today's youth.

The World Youth Report 2005, which surveyed 1,2 billion young people aged 15 to 24, shows that some 209 million young people, or 18 percent of all youth, currently live on less than 1 US dollar per day, and 515 million live on less than 2 dollars per day.

Today's youth are the best educated generation in history even though 130 million are still illiterate. A total of 10 million have HIV/AIDS, which is the primary cause of death.

The report was published ahead of a daylong General Assembly session devoted to the issue of youth. Nearly 48 young delegates from two dozen countries are registered to attend, as well as 300 youth organizations.
