Personal Doctor: Yasser Arafat Was Poisoned

Politics | September 10, 2005, Saturday // 00:00

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has died of poisoning, his personal doctor has said thus confirming Israeli press information released a few days ago.

The statement of Arafat's doctor was reported by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Newspaper Al-Bayan said that French doctors spread rumors that Arafat died of AIDS because they wanted to conceal the real reason for the death of Arafat.

Arafat was rushed to the Percy Military Training Hospital outside Paris after falling violently ill at his West Bank compound in Ramallah, where Israel had confined him for the last three years of his life. He had been in poor health for several years. He died on 11 November 2004.

French doctors who treated Arafat concluded he died of a "massive brain haemorrhage" after suffering intestinal inflammation, jaundice and a blood condition known as disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC. But the records are inconclusive about what brought about DIC, which has numerous causes.

"Consultation with experts and laboratory tests could not help to find a cause that would explain ... the group of syndromes," the French doctors wrote.

Since Arafat's death, rumours have swirled throughout the Middle East that Arafat died from either AIDS or poisoning. Many Palestinian officials insist that Israeli agents somehow poisoned him.

The medical report makes no mention of poisoning or AIDS.
