Democrats Attack Ethnic Party Leader, Former Mayor

Politics | July 8, 2005, Friday

All options for a right-centered coalition in the next government are exhausted, said Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) deputy head.

Vesselin Metodiev said the culprit is the leader of the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), Ahmed Dogan.

His colleague, Ekaterina Mihailova, criticized the outgoing government. Part of it occupies itself with whether Simeon Saxe-Coburg will be the next Prime Minister and the other concludes shady deals.

Mihailova also criticized former mayor Stefan Sofianski, saying he escaped responsibility for Sofia's garbage crisis by hiding in parliament. Sofianski was elected MP and had to resign from his position.

MRF, which was the junior partner in the SIINM government, ranked third with the support of 14.17% thus winning 34 MPs in the next assembly.

DSB, headed by ex Prime Minister Ivan Kosotv, will have 17 seats as its was backed by 7.08% of the Bulgarians.

Sofianski's Bulgarian People's Union will be presented by 13 MPs in the next Bulgarian Parliament. It received 5.42% of the votes in the June 25 general elections in the country.
