World-famous Bulgarian opera singer Ghena Dimitrova died Saturday morning in Milan after a fabulous career on the most prestigious stages.
She was suffering from an incurable disease and was admitted to an Italian hospital, where her condition abruptly deteriorated.
It was her last will to spend her last days in Bulgaria and be buried here.
Reports say her family has approached the government to help them hold the funeral in Bulgaria.
The remains of Ghena Dimitrova are expected to be transported to Bulgaria in the next several days, Bulgaria's Consul General in Milan Ivo Ivanov announced.
"For good or bad, I saw the disease breaking her over the last three months and can hardly say I was not prepared for her near end. Nevertheless I am truly saddened. A great personality is gone," Bulgarian opera legend Nikola Gyuzelev commented for the Bulgarian National Radio.
Ghena Dimitrova has been reconginzed as one of the most famous sopranos of the past 35 years. She was born in Beglezh, Bulgaria in 1941. Graduated singing with maestro Christo Brambarov at the Sofia Conservatory in 1965 and made her debut in Sofia in 1967.
