The son of a French politician, he is also a self-published poet and author of several books about contemporary French culture and a biography of Napoleon.
A career diplomat, Dominique de Villepin graduated from the prestigious Ecole Nationale d'Administration and served in Delhi and twice in Washington.
In 1980-84 Villepin headed France's foreign ministry - African and Malagasy affairs.
In 1984-89 he served at the French embassy in Washington, and then in 1989-92 at the French embassy in Delhi.
In 1992-93 Villepin was back at the Foreign ministry - African and Malagasy affairs and afterwards became chief of staff of the minister of foreign affairs until 1995.
Villepin was appointed secretary general of the presidency in 1995, a position he occupied until 2002.
In June 2002 he was appointed foreign minister and in March 2004 took the office of interior minister.
