BULGARIA KEEPS DOWN ROSE PRODUCTION

About a ton of rose oil a year is the optimal quantity for Bulgaria, according to the Association of Essential Oil, Perfumery and Cosmetics Producers, quoted by BTA agensy. A larger output would push down the price of Bulgarian rose oil which
now fetched between $3,400 and $3,700 per kilo on the international markets. Most of the output is exported. Yves Saint Laurent, Channel and other perfume makers use Bulgarian rose oil as an ingredient in their formulas. According to Yuliana Ognyanova of the Association, the shortage of turnover credits is a major problem for processing plants. Of 1,500 ha of rose plantations, only 250 ha are highly intensive, said the chief of the Bulgarian Rose Laboratory, Nikola Nenov. The purchase price of rose petals this year is expected around DEM 0.90 per kilo and will fluctuate according to the quality.
