Sofia Plays Down Delay in EP Observer Status

Politics | May 5, 2005, Thursday // 00:00

The delay in observer status to the European Parliament for Bulgaria and Romania is not detrimental, according to Sofia's diplomacy.

In the words of Deputy Foreign Minister and Spokesperson Gergana Grancharova Bulgaria has achieved numerous successes but still the months counting down to 1 January 2007 promise to be very hard.

The leaders of European Parliament political groups have decided to delay the status of observers for the new parliamentarians from Bulgaria and Romania. The observer status is delayed until 1 January 2006 or 1 January 2007 in case that the safeguard clause is enforced thus postponing their accession by one year.

Grancharova has pointed out that the European Union is living through hardships at this very moment and both EU member and aspirant countries must double their efforts.

She said that the EP's decision adopted late on Wednesday would not affect Bulgaria dramatically, so far as the Balkan country already has observer representatives at all other EU institutions.
