Politics | March 6, 2005, Sunday // 00:00

US and Iraqi forces have stepped up operations in the city of Samarra, after reports that top militant al-Zarqawi might be hiding there.

All entrances leading to Samarra were sealed during the searches.
A bounty of USD 25 M has been put on the head of Abu Musab al-Zarwaqi, making him Iraq's most wanted militant.

Jordan-born al-Zarqawi leads an Islamist faction in Iraq, and has been blamed for some of the worst atrocities since war was over.

The militant has claimed responsibility for the bloody train bombings in Madrid, as well as for the carnage of numerous hostages seized in Iraq.

The US intelligence believes that he allied with al-Qaeda last year.
