Film Center Deal Spells Nu Image Fate in Bulgaria

Business | February 22, 2005, Tuesday

Movie producer Nu Image, one of the four shortlisted bidders in the sale of state film production center, pledged to leave Bulgaria if it fails to acquire 95% stake in Sofia-based Boyana Film EAD.

The owner of the company Avi Lerner broke the news Tuesday, adding that Nu Image has produced over 40 movies and invested over USD 200 M in Bulgaria for the last six years.

If we acquire Boyana we will turn it into the biggest film studio in Boyana, Lerner said. If we fail to do that, however, we might as well have to look for another place in Europe.

Nu Image also announced that the Hollywood stars Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank are expected to come to Bulgaria.

Besides Nu Image Bulgaria, Ealing Studios Enterprises, Dragon International Studios Bulgaria Limited and Bavaria Film have submitted indicative offers for the state film centre Boyana Film EAD. Binding offers will be accepted by March 4.

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?
That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out.

That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters.

That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor.

That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections.
