Ireland's Prime Minister Bertie Ahern arrived in Sofia Friday as part of an official visit to Bulgaria and Poland over the next few days to discuss EU political issues.

Bertie Ahern will meet his Bulgarian counterpart Simeon Saxe-Coburg to discuss how Ireland can assist the country's application for membership of the European Union.

It was during the Irish EU Presidency in first half of 2004 that Bulgaria closed last chapters of negotiations and wrapped up its accession talks.

He is later due to be welcomed by President Georgi Parvanov who will decorate Ahern with the state order Stara Planina for Irish premier's outstanding contribution to Bulgaria's progress en route to the EU.
