NATO Defence chiefs gathered in Nice on Thursday for talks set to focus on boosting training for Iraqi security forces and expanding a peacekeeping force in Afghanistan, key fronts in the US war on terror.

Bulgaria also joined the informal meeting, presented by the Deputy Defense Minister Ilko Dimitrov and the Chief of Army Staff General Nikola Kolev.

The Nice talks are the first meeting in France for four decades, in what is seen as symbolizing easing of French tensions with NATO alliance.

Those tensions date from long before the Iraq crisis, starting prior to General Charles de Gaulle decision to pull France out of NATO's integrated military command in 1966.
