US Troops Kill 4 Iraqis in Prison Riot
Politics | February 1, 2005, TuesdayPrisoners at Camp Bucca in southern Iraq began throwing rocks and "fashioning weapons from materials inside their living areas", after US troops conducted a routine search for contraband, the US military said in a statement, as quoted by AFP.
"Guards attempted to calm the increasingly volatile situation using verbal warnings and, when that failed, by u se of non-lethal force," it said. "After about 45 minutes of escalating danger, lethal force was used to quell the violence."
The prison houses more than 5 300 inmates.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
