Four Iraqis were killed and six others wounded during a riot at a prison in southern Iraq, which is controlled by US troops.

Prisoners at Camp Bucca in southern Iraq began throwing rocks and "fashioning weapons from materials inside their living areas", after US troops conducted a routine search for contraband, the US military said in a statement, as quoted by AFP.

"Guards attempted to calm the increasingly volatile situation using verbal warnings and, when that failed, by u se of non-lethal force," it said. "After about 45 minutes of escalating danger, lethal force was used to quell the violence."

The prison houses more than 5 300 inmates.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.
