Bulgaria's Parliament Passes Budget 2005

Bulgaria's Parliament adopted at first reading the budget bill for next year with the votes of 128 MPs from the ruling coalition and the maverick Novoto Vreme (New Time) political party.

The parliamentary groups of left-wing Socialist Party, the right-wing Union of Democratic Party and the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria as well as the People's Union voted against the bill (104).

Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg attended the Parliamentary vote along with all ministers.

Maverick lawmakers from Novoto Vreme political party and the ruling coalition - Simeon II National Movement and junior coalition partner the Movement for Rights and Freedoms ironed out their differences over the budget draft during the latest round of talks.

The agreement reached by the three parliamentary groups envisages an additional BGN 135 M to be allotted for financing Bulgaria's education and science.

Priority has been assigned to the introduction of information and communication technologies, incentives for Bulgarian participation in international programs and projects, improving the qualification of teachers.
