A POLICE officer was killed at a polling station in central Ukraine today as the former Soviet republic voted in a highly charged runoff presidential election, officials said.

The police officer was killed in the Cherkassy region, according to Sergei Kivalov, the chief of the central election commission, quoted by AFP.

Kivalov did not provide any details of the incident.

This is the second round of the presidential elections in Ukraine, putting the pro-Russian ruling party candidate Viktor Yanukovich against pro-Western opposition foe Viktor Yushchenko.
