The earthquake, epicentred in the Vrancea Mountain in southern Romania, measured about 5.5 on the Richter scale and was felt across the country.

The tremour was felt strongest in Northern and Northeastern Bulgaria. In settlements along the Danube river, which makes Bulgaria's border with Romania, people rushed to the streets in panic. In the town of Silistra the tremour cracked the walls of buildings.

An earthquake hit Romania simultenously, shaking buildings in the capital Bucharest but apparently causing little damage.
