France has blamed attempts of a self-appointed and unofficial mediator in the hostage crisis in Iraq for frustrating the country's efforts to gain their release. French MP and mediator Didier Julia has been leading unofficial attempts to free the two journalists. According to Foreign Minister Michel Barnier indirect contact has been established with the hostage-takers but it was broke by Julia's private efforts. Earlier this week Julia said that the release of the two French journalists failed after a group of Iraqis transporting them was bombarded by U.S. forces. The two French journalists Christian Chesnot, 37, and George Malbrunot, 41, were arrested in Iraq in August.
