Green Card Lottery Feeds New Hopes among Bulgarians

Bulgarians looking to obtain a US permanent-resident document have a new chance this year, as natives from the country are again eligible to apply in the Green Card Lottery.

Applications for the 2006 DV lottery will be accepted between November 5, 2004 and January 7, 2005. Persons seeking to apply must register electronically, online through the designated Internet website, www.dvlottery.state.gov during the registration period.

A permanent-resident document, known as a "green card," allows an immigrant to live and work indefinitely in the United Sates and is the first step toward citizenship.

Each year, the US Department of State awards 50,000 permanent visas to winners of their annual Green Card Lottery (Diversity Immigrant Visa Program).

The purpose of the annual lottery is to promote ethnic diversity in the United States by attracting citizens of countries with traditionally lower rates of immigration to the United States.
