Five people have been killed and at least twenty injured in a bomb explosion, which ripped through a bus in Istanbul, days before the city hosts a summit of NATO leaders.

According to Turkish television, the bus was passing in front of a hospital in a residential district of Turkey's largest city on Thursday when the blast occurred.

The responsibility for the earlier terrorist act in an Ankara hotel was claimed by a leftist terror faction, which has been to blame for a series of high-profile attacks over the last few years.

Security has been a special concern to Turkey, which will host a NATO summit on June 28-29 in Ankara. Surveillance planes will monitor a no-fly zone over the area.

Leaders including US President George Bush, Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac are due to attend.

After its historic expansion eastwards, NATO will use the Istanbul summit next week to press ahead with closer links with seven mostly Mediterranean rim states.
