A strong explosion rocked central Baghdad.

Witnesses said a car bomb had exploded near Tahrir Square. At least three people are reported dead while dozens were said to have been wounded.

In total, up to three or four possibly simultaneous explosions were reported throughout the Iraqi capital.

People claim that three civilian sport utility vehicles passed by as the blast occurred. All were damaged and one could be seen burning. Iraqi police shot in the air to drive back people who struck the cars with sticks. The crowd shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Great," and "Down with the USA."

The blast shattered a nearby building on the square, which is located on the eastern side of Baghdad's Jumhuria Bridge. The bridge leads to the Green Zone, the headquarters of the occupation authority.
