A top Iraqi diplomat has been shot dead in an attack in Baghdad.

Unknown assailants fired at the car of Bassam Qubba, the ministry's director-general, as he was on his way to work on Saturday in Baghdad's Adhamiya district, a predominantly Sunni Muslim district of the capital.

Qubba died in hospital at about 8.30 a.m. local time, according to reports.

The 60-year-old politician was in charge of legal issues.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the murder of Qubba comes as a shock, but not as a surprise.
