The attack comes on the eve of President George Bush's trip to Rome, due to arrive on Friday, which triggered off massive demonstrations by pacifists in Italian capital.

Bush visits Rome as part of celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Rome by American troops in 1944. He will also have an audience with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican before flying to France on Saturday.
