Fresh Clashes in Iraqi Holy City
Politics | May 28, 2004, FridayThe violence came 24 hours after a truce was agreed between US forces and the militia of radical cleric Moqtada Sadr in the nearby holy city of Najaf.
Sadr's fighters have battled US forces in three southern cities for two months.
The ceasefire - which came into force on Thursday - is based on an offer by Sadr's militia to withdraw from Najaf and Kufa as long as US forces also pull back.
