Two Japanese journalists have been attacked in Iraq south of Baghdad and there are fears that one of them had been killed in a drive-by shooting.

"The Japanese journalists have been attacked when they were heading north from Samawa," Tokyo's top government spokesman announced.

Samawa is the southern Iraqi town where Japanese troops are based for humanitarian assistance.

The two men have been identified as Shinsuke Hashida, a 61-year-old freelance journalist and veteran of war-zone reporting based in Bangkok, and his nephew Kotaro Ogawa, 33, from the western Japan city of Tottori.
