People in Karbala Urged to Flee City
Politics | May 15, 2004, SaturdayAccording to AFP reports the call follows the deaths of three Iraqi civilians in clashes between a patrol of the Iraqi Civil Defence Corps (ICDC) and the militants loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
The patrol has been assaulted some 50 meters from the Imam Hussein and Imam Abass' shrines in downtown Karbala.
A soldier from the coalition forces has been wounded in an attack near a mosque in the center of the southern city. He has been evacuated to Polish Lima base and his life is out of danger.
A Bulgarian infantry unit has been deployed in the restive southern city of Karbala as part of a 9,000-strong Polish-led multinational contingent.
