A soldier from the US-led coalition forces has been killed in the fighting that erupted with the militia of the Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr, AFP reported.

The nationality of the killed soldier has not been disclosed yet.

No further details have been disclosed.

Earlier reports said three Iraqis had been killed and another nine wounded as clashes erupted between the coalition troops and Al-Sadr militia in the holy city of Karbala.

The exchange of fire occurred shortly after midnight when Mehdi Army militiamen fired mortar bombs, rocket-propelled grenades and machineguns at U.S. and Bulgarian positions in the restive southern Iraqi city.

The rebel cleric, who is believed to be in the city of Najaf, has reiterated threats to stage suicide attacks against occupation forces targets in Iraq should they enter the holy cities. The U.S. has called for the arrest of the militant cleric for inciting violence, and said its forces would hunt him down.
