Six Bulgarian soldiers have been killed during the Karbala mission. When a Bulgarian unit was first deployed in the city, it was considered rather a peaceful one. Experts commented that the Karbala Shiites were well predisposed toward the coalition troops.
Over the last few months, however, the soldiers and their bases have been attacked almost daily.
Bulgarian politicians made a series of diplomatic efforts to cheer up the unit, and ease domestic pressure for pullout. President Georgi Parvanov even made a surprising trip to Karbala two weeks ago, and spend several hours with the soldiers at the Kilo base.
