Today we witness a historic event, a joyful day for all of us, EU Commission President Romano Prodi said at the special press conference in Dublin organized to mark the historic EU expansion.

However, despite the achieved success we should not forget the new countries willing to become a part of the Union, Prodi underlined. He also pointed out the fact that Croatia has already firmly stated its will to become a part of the big European family, while negotiations with Bulgaria will be wrapped up by the end of 2004.

EU Commission President said that the expansion process leads to a major economic step forward that would result into to improved stability in the region.
