Karbala Tension Builds Up

Karbala peacekeepers are facing a complex task as thousands of Arabyeen pilgrims are gathering in the city.

As much as 800,000 Shiite Muslims have arrived in the city over the last 24 hours alone. Many of the newcomers tend to act aggressively toward coalition forces, some even carry firearms.

Meanwhile, a wounded Bulgarian soldier underwent surgery in local Lima medical center. Nenko Kotov got lightly wounded Sunday night, when patrolling troops came under gunfire. Doctors have taken a bullet out of his shoulder.

On April 11, five million Shiites are expected to make a pilgrimage to Karbala, to commemorate Imam Ali.
