Slovaks went to the polls to choose a new president as well as vote in a referendum on whether they want to oust their government, which has pursued painful economic reforms needed to join the EU.
Although there are 11 candidates on the ballot, the presidential election is widely expected to be a two-horse race between Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan, 64, and controversial 61-year-old former prime minister Vladimir Meciar.
Polls suggest that Kukan is likely to pick up 28 percent of the vote followed by Meciar with 24 percent, leading to a second round runoff on April 17.
