Producer Bozhinov: It's Important They Chose a Bulgarian to Play Krum

Society | February 25, 2004, Wednesday

The important thing is that casting directors in London actually chose a Bulgarian native to play the part of Viktor Krum in the next Harry Potter movie, producer Victor Bozhinov, who directed the first casting in Sofia, told Novinite.com Wednesday.

He was approached for comment after on Tuesday it emerged that a Bulgarian boy currently living in London was selected to play Krum.

Until the last moment, British casting directors hesitated whether the part should go to the London-living teenager, or to one of two other Krum wannabes. They were among the 46 candidates whose taped appearances were sent to London by a Bulgarian jury, led by Bozhinov.

The Warner Brothers London office initially picked half of the "best choice" Bulgarian aspirants, eager to be cast as Viktor Krum in the fourth Harry Potter movie. Out of them only two boys made it to the next stage, but eventually the jury gave them both the thumbs down.

"I don't know what made them pick the London resident," Bozhinov told Novinite.com.

He underlined that he didn't know the name of the newly-picked actor yet, and said that details about the casting in London were still to be released.

Bozhinov, however, explained that candidates for the part of Viktor Krum from all over the world were also able to send their pictures and taped performances to London, so until the last minute it was not certain whether a Bulgarian would get the role.

The candidates for the role of the 17-year-old captain of the Bulgarian Quidditch team, one of the leading roles in the movie, were required to be aged 15-19, swarthy boys in good health. Some knowledge of English was also obligatory.
